“I don’t know… what do you want me to say? The woman I loved just informed me that she got rid of my baby without telling me. I got angry. I got drunk. And I took it out on a bunch of people,” I say in the group counselling session we’re forced to attend. They drive me crazy, because we rehash the reason behind the crime that got us in here again and again and again. It’s like the guy wants us to tell him every fucking shitty little detail of our life until now.

In two years, he hasn’t gotten much from me, and he’s unlikely to ever get much from me. Yeah, I did the wrong thing. I fucking pleaded guilty to it, and I’m doing my time. He needs to get off my fucking case about it.

“Do you think you have a problem with alcohol?” he asks me for the zillionth time since I’ve been here.

I roll my eyes. “No. I have a fucking problem with repeated questions. I have a problem with this fucking ‘correctional facility’. What I did to get landed in here, is fucking nothing compared to what goes on in here daily. How the fuck is this place supposed to ‘correct’ me? Hmmm? How the fuck is it supposed to correct anyone? What – these stupid group sessions are supposed to do something? You don’t even remember our fucking answers from one week to the next. Every fucking week, you ask me the same questions. Am I sorry I put those people in the hospital? Yeah. I fucking am. Do I want to talk about it on a weekly basis? No. Fuck no! I just want to do my time and get the fuck out of here. I want to find my woman and get on with my life.”

The counsellor, a man with a busy grey and black beard, nods his head slowly. “You’re angry. I can see that. But who are you angry with?”

“You! I’m fucking angry at you!” I yell at him.

“I reckon you should be angry at your woman,” Jordy says from beside me.

“What the fuck, man?” I reply, scrunching up my face. “You shut your fucking mouth about my woman.”

The counsellor holds up his hand to try and get me to back off.

“That’s interesting, Jordan. What makes you think he should be angry at his ‘woman’?” the counsellor asks.

I shoot Jordy a filthy look. He should know I don’t like anyone talking shit about Henrietta.

“I just think that she’s to blame. If she had have kept the baby and worked things out with Damo, he’d still be a free man. The way he tells it, he never hurt the girl. He fuckin’ worshipped her – still does. I reckon there should be some sort of culpability there, you know?”

I shake my head. Suddenly regretting ever talking to him about Henrietta. But being cellmates means he’s been there, seeing me try to write that stupid letter to her, over and over again.
